Marketing Secret #1 – Don't Follow the Pied Piper!

Remember this story?

Legend has it that a German town hired a rat-catcher to remove the rats which had overtaken the town.  When the citizens refused to pay for his service, he used his instrument's magical power on their children, leading them away as he had the rats. 

Why is this relevant in marketing?

Unfortunately, I see hundreds of business cards, flyers, and marketing brochures from businesses across all industries, that all look alike and literally say the same thing.  The time and money invested in these things easily runs into hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars. 

Are you following the flute of the Pied Piper? Or marching to the beat of your own drum?

Step 1 - Review your Marketing Material designs:

  • No matter how expensive, does your marketing look and sound like everyone else?
  • Do you make the same promises as everyone else?

Step 2 - Review your Online Marketing:

  • Is your online marketing message inconsistent from platform to platform?
  • Are you promoting your business instead of solutions?

Just because “everyone else” believes that digital or online marketing is the ONLY way to get business today, doesn't mean you should fall into that trap! Thousands of people go out of business or miss business oppotunities, because they follow the crowd.

Remember the old saying, “If you do what you have always done, you are going to get what you have always gotten?”

Or maybe, “The definition of insanity is doing the same things and expecting a different outcome?”

If these sayings apply and your answer is a guilty yes, then this is a timely reminder for you!

Our role here is to remind you to focus on marketing that does two things -

  1. Gets the response that you want - having people respond to you, and
  2. Lets you provide your product or service to your customer so you are making money, having fun and able to run a successful business.

Step 3 - Stand Out from the Crowd:

Instead of trying to be original, different, or worse, trying to be something that you're not; identify the unique ways your business delivers your product and service AND sell that.  When people are searching online, they are telling you already that they have a problem and are seeking a solution.  They want to know if you can fix their issue, so sell your solution, not how you are different. 

Remember, if you do say you are different or you're the best,
you have to prove it.  
And to prove it, you need to have the right rungs on the ladder!

Stop following the Pied Piper!!!

Nothing worthwhile comes for free.  At some point you need to be prepared to put the hard yards in for your business to succeed.  So, prepare to be unique and focus on what's important, which is how your solutions can positively impact your prospects.
