Marketing Secret #88 Using The Right Computer Software
I know this chapter might sound dumb to some people, but I have to tell you this is one area where a lot of business people are wasting time and losing a lot of money. What area is that?
As far as software, there’s all kinds of software that will help make you more efficient. Software like Quicken, which will take care of your bills and keep track of how much money you have in your bank account is nice and important, but that’s not the kind of software that’s going to make you money.
The kind of software that’s going to make you money are some of the powerful programs on the market that track all your leads, all your clients, all your commissions, receivables, cash flow, all your follow up responses, your phone contacts, and so forth. Such software will (1) automate you, and (2) make sure the stuff gets done that needs to get done.
See, one of the biggest problems our members have is that they know what to do because we’ve told them what to do, but they still won’t do it. They say they just don’t have the time, or it’s too complicated, or they don’t have the energy, or whatever.
I hate to tell you this, but those excuses aren’t going to pay any bills. With the software that’s on the market today, you can have all that stuff done for you automatically, have high school kids helping you take care of stuffing envelopes or putting labels on postcards, and so on.
You spend your time talking to prospects and clients/customers/patients.
What if you’re afraid of a computer or you’re not computer literate? What if they scare the hell out of you? What if you don’t want to waste your time sitting in front of the computer? Those are all good questions, and I have answers for you.
First, anybody who doesn’t want to sit and actually use the computer, is actually thinking very intelligently.
I said that you need to have the computer software to help you make money, I didn’t say that you have to sit in front of the computer and use it yourself.
In fact, in my office, the only thing I do, and have done for years, is use it to write letters and so forth. Any other computer software, such as a database or tracking leads or clients or money, has been taken care of by other people.
You should delegate all that stuff out. A lot of business people who do have computers like to sit around and play with desktop publishing software and other fancy programs that are really nice and cute and do a good job…but those software programs don’t make you any money!
See, the point of the computer is to make money.
If you want to play games with it, that’s fine. Get the games that are available and have fun. But, if you want to use the computer to make money, it should be done to track your leads, follow up on your leads, and then track all of the other functions of contacting clients/customers/patients such as phone calls, follow ups, closings, etc.
I’m going to be honest with you. Most high school kids, and for sure every university kid, knows more about computers than you’re probably ever going to know.
I have several university kids working for me part-time who take care of many of our computer functions of our business. We pay them a few dollars an hour, they’re happy to learn the business and see how state of the art marketing and selling works, and I love it because they get everything done in a way that I could never do myself.
Delegation is a key to success, and delegating computer work is a bigger key to success. Please don’t make the mistake of thinking that you don’t need a computer, and then please don’t make the mistake of thinking that, if you have a computer, you have to learn how to run it all yourself and waste your time doing it.
You don’t make money sitting in front of a keyboard. You make money getting new prospects and reselling to your existing clients/customers/patients.
I just wanted to mention this as one of the secrets because I can’t ignore one of the biggest mistakes I see people making. If you’re not sure about how to find somebody, run a want ad in your local paper saying that you need somebody to help you run a computer (from their home, if possible), and I guarantee you’ll be flooded with people who want the job.
We just ran ad here recently looking for some assistants to help us with computer work, and we got over 100 resumes from one ad. They’re out there, and they’re looking for the work. They like to work on computers, and you shouldn’t. You should like to talk to clients/customers/patients and prospects. Having assistants help you is the best way to do that.
